Shopping Bag Project

Makro have been making a difference with Izzi Trust since 2008 supporting their holiday feeding scheme to over 4000 families at partner outreach schools.

The Izzi Trust partner with four quintile 1 schools providing a much needed united nations approved food parcel to tide the students over the long winter and Christmas holidays.

Building a Nation through Education is the Izzi Trust’s core objective and this is achieved through providing bursaries at some of South Africa’s top schools and running feeding schemes with outreach schools.

The re-usable and environmentally friendly shopping bag initiative with Makro will assist the Izzi Trust to feed and educate a child.
Isikhwama bag manufacturers , Located in Cape Town, is a BEE company which is co-owned by two women and employs local semi-skilled and unskilled people who were previously out of work. Their humble beginnings of bag making started with 200 hundred bags a week and through the support of a retail development programme, their business has grown to employ over 70 people producing about 30,000 bags every week.  With the introduction of the Izzi Trust bag with Makro, Isikhwama is providing work in these tough economic times and teaching a new skill to an additional 7 new staff.

The shopping bag initiative aims to help reduce the need to use plastic bags which have a detrimental impact on our environment and helps the consumer to reduce the amount they spend on plastic bags. The proceeds of the bags go to The Izzi Trust and will assist them with their holiday feeding schemes and their bursary programme.
